Electrical, mechanical and engineering skills were all on show at the Oresome Trades camp at Pioneer State High School this week.

The three-day camp was offered to vocational education and training (VET) students from Year 11 keen to know more about trade careers in the resources sector.

The workshop was delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) in partnership with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA).

Students from five local high schools took the opportunity to develop their technical skills while connecting with experienced BMA tradespeople.

With help from QMEA educators and BMA tradespeople, students    designed and built a model mine vehicle complete with mechanical and electrical features.

Pioneer State High School principal, Lisa Veney, said the students enjoyed having the time to talk with experienced tradespeople about their careers.

“These students are working towards a great future for themselves in the trades and this workshop gives them a unique opportunity to connect with the BMA team and find out more about the trade roles in the industry,” said Ms Veney.

Linda Murry, General Manager of BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point Coal Terminal, said there was a shortage of skilled tradespeople in the resources sector.

“Our successful apprenticeship program has been developed to help address this shortage and support young people as they start their career,” she said.

“Who knows – some of the students in this workshop may well end up being on our apprenticeship program in the future.”

Katrina-Lee Jones, Director of Education, Skills and Diversity of the Queensland Resources Council said the VET pathway was a popular option for senior students.

“There is a high demand for skilled tradespeople across Queensland, including in Mackay,” said Ms Jones.

“These students are in the process of getting VET qualifications at school so they will be in a good position to start an apprenticeship once they finish Year 12 – which is great news for potential employers in the region,” said Ms Jones.

The ten students attending the camp hosted by Pioneer state High School are from the following schools:

  • Pioneer State High School
  • Mackay Northern Beaches State High School,
  • Mackay State High School,
  • St Patrick’s College, Mackay
  • Sarina State High School
