A dynamic combination of industry insights and practical job advice was delivered to local Year 10 students at a CQU Campus Connect workshop today.
Over 50 students from Calliope SHS, Toolooa SHS, Chanel College and Gladstone SHS participated in the workshop delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) in partnership with ConocoPhillps, the downstream operator of Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG).
During the workshop the students had expert advice from a Human Resources consultant about roles needed across the resources and energy sector, and how to start their career with tips on resume writing and preparing for interviews.
Katrina-Lee Jones, Policy Director for Skills, Education and Diversity at the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) said the CQU Campus Connect workshop had been especially developed for students in the Gladstone region.
“The processing and transportation of gas out of Gladstone is a major part of the local economy and community,” Ms Jones.
“Students are keen to discover the diversity of professional and trade careers they could have in the industry and the study or trainee pathways available to reach their career goals,” she said.
“I am sure the students were inspired by the personal career stories shared throughout the day.”
Stakeholder Relations Manager at ConocoPhillips Australia, Chantale Lane said CQU Campus Connect was an important event on the ConocoPhillips community calendar.
“We are invested in partnering with the QMEA and CQUniversity to deliver workshops which engage local students in our industry and help them connect to careers,” Ms Lane said.
“The CQU Campus Connect workshop is also quite unique as it also explores many careers outside of the usual STEM and trade careers most students would be aware of – like finance, law, and health and safety,” she said.
“The energy sector is dynamic and growing, we are keen to provide opportunities for young people from the Gladstone region to be a part of our future – today’s workshop may be the first step in their career story.”
