Former Rockhampton Girls’ Grammar School student Tania Bauman will return to her alma mater to encourage students to consider science and engineering careers.

Tania is HR Manager with Coronado Curragh, and wants to share with the girls the wide range of careers available in the resources sector, particularly in the maths and science fields.

The one-day event, conducted by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) is aimed at high-achieving Years nine and 10 students interested in pursuing a professional career in engineering or science.

More than 20 girls will complete a series of hands-on challenges centred on the science and engineering related professions in the resources sector.

Tania will be among several industry professionals from Coronado Curragh and Adani Mining to speak to the students about their careers and mentor them through the activities.

“It’s really important to share with the girls careers that they might not have considered,” said Tania.

“Often girls will drop maths and science subjects, and then find that they have narrowed their options for science-based careers,” she said.

“Coronado Curagh is very proud to be a QMEA sponsor, particularly as it helps to unveil the pathways they can take into our sector.”

Christine Hills, principal of RGGS said she was delighted to have Tania return to the school to demonstrate first-hand the opportunities open to the students, and give insights into stepping onto career paths.

“At RGGS we instil in our students that women can achieve anything, and this event certainly emphasises that point,” she said.

Adani Australia Environment Manager, Vanessa Vong said Adani Australia is proud to support QMEA and staff enjoyed assisting students during these events.

“Adani Australia has a very strong interest in creating a diverse workforce sourced from our local communities. The event at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School is one way of encouraging more females to consider a career within the mining and resources sector,” she said.

QRC is the peak representative body for Queensland ‘s resource sector. The Queensland resources sector provides one in every $6 dollars in the Queensland economy, sustains one in eight Queensland jobs, and supports more than 16,400 businesses across the state, all from 0.1 percent of Queensland’s land mass.

The QMEA is a partnership between the QRC and the Queensland Government under its Gateway to Industry Schools program. It has 46 schools throughout Queensland.
