About 60 Gladstone students have spent the day becoming skilled in supply chain logistics with help from experts from the resources sector. ‘Pit to Port’ delivered by  the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) challenged student minds in mathematics, logistics, communications and team work.

Industry representatives from Conoco Phillips Australia, NRG, QER, Boyne Smelter Limited and Gladstone Ports Corporation provided help to the year 7 QMEA students.

“By working in teams, the students will better understand the export business through the supply chain process and learn about Workplace Health and Safety, Fleet Management, and Port and Harbour Operation,” said Katrina-Lee Jones Policy Director Skills, Education and Training with the Queensland Resources Council (QRC).

 

“The day finished with the teams providing a presentation of their Pit to Port operations to ‘The Board’ and demonstrated how they have managed the variations of these sites effectively for the best result.

 

“Students from Toolooa, Tannum Sands, Gladstone state high schools and Chanel College attended the event at Gladstone’s CQUniversity Marina Campus and were challenged with high level mathematics, time management and lateral thinking,” she said.

 

“Hearing first-hand about different career options and  how to get onto those pathways is invaluable for students who are starting to think about the direction their senior studies will take,” said Conoco Phillips’ Robert Gibb.

 

“This exercise also helps students realise the connections between their classroom lessons and the world of work,” he said.
