The Queensland State of Origin team were not the only winners this week – with Year 7 science students from Pimlico State High School having time out from their regular classes today to explore the earth’s natural resources.

The ‘Treasures of the Earth’ workshop involved a combination of practical science experiments and research activities, demonstrating how minerals and resources are discovered, processed and help to create products we use every day.

The workshop was delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC), in partnership with Bravus Mining and Resources,

Katrina-Lee Jones, QRC Policy Director – Skills, Education and Diversity, said the workshop had been developed to give the students a new perspective of earth sciences.

“They are often surprised by how many natural resources and minerals are used to create items like mobile phones and electric cars,” said Ms Jones.

Bravus Mining and Resources Head of Reputation Kate Campbell said Bravus was proud to help young people learn about mining through its sponsorship of the QMEA.

“The mining industry is both the backbone of the Australian economy and of modern society. It provides the raw materials for products we all rely on every day,” Ms Campbell said.

“Global demand for reliable and affordable baseload power is increasing, and that means we’ll be exporting high-quality coal to the world for decades to come.

“We’re excited to partner with the QMEA to run workshops like this to show the next generation exactly what responsible mining looks like, and the pathways that could lead them to a rewarding career at Carmichael.

“The vast majority of the 1,200 people who work at our Carmichael mine live in Townsville, Rockhampton and elsewhere in regional Queensland, and we’re proud of the economic value these jobs bring to our communities.

“We hope some of the students from Pimlico will also be inspired to join the mining industry one day.”
