The Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) hosted its first Careers and Problem-Solving workshop in Gladstone today showcasing potential careers in the gas industry to Year 10 students.

The careers workshop was attended by nearly 50 high school students from Gladstone SHS, Tannum Sands SHS and Calliope SHS.

The workshop was delivered by the QMEA in partnership with APLNG ConocoPhillips who had members of their team on hand to answer questions from the students and share their career experiences in the gas industry.

Chantale Lane, APLNG ConocoPhillips Stakeholder Relations Manager, said they were excited to be involved in the bespoke workshop developed to inspire students from the region to join their sector.

“Gladstone is a wonderful place to live and work and APLNG ConocoPhillips is a major employer in the area,” said Ms Lane.

“We hope that today’s experience has inspired some of these students to pursue a career into one of the many roles needed for us to have a successful gas operation – including professional, technical and support roles,” she said.

“If these Year 10 students are interested in a future in engineering, maintenance and reliability, geology, information technology, project management, health and safety or logistics then the gas sector workforce is definitely one to consider.”

The QMEA is the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC). Katrina-Lee Jones, QRC Director of Skills, Education and Diversity said the careers information was complemented with a project management activity for the students and expert advice on job-seeking and interview skills.

“This workshop is perfectly timed as the Year 10 students consider their subject selection for senior studies and decide on a university or trade pathway after school,” said Ms Jones.

“This careers workshop has been a great initiative, giving the students practical advice and a sneak peek into potential careers,” she said.

“The gas industry is a dynamic place to work, and we are keen to encourage school leavers to become a part of a sector that powers our community and is playing a valuable role in the energy transition to a low-carbon future.”
