Abbot Point Operations (APO) team members had the chance to show their experience and skills to emerging tradespeople at a recent ‘Tradies for a Day’ workshop at Bowen State High School.
The workshop, delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) in partnership with the APO, was designed to give the Year 10 students a mix of practical skill development and valuable career advice.
The QMEA is the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC).
QRC Policy Director – Skills, Education and Diversity, Katrina-Lee Jones said the workshop was of great value to the students.
“There was a huge demand for this workshop from the Year 10 design and technology students showing they have a genuine interest in discovering more about local trade careers in the resources sector,” Ms Jones said.
“A full-day workshop rotating through activities developed to reflect tasks a tradesperson might perform as an electrician or a mechanic is a great insight for these students,” she said.
“Having experienced APO tradespeople on-hand to guide them through the activities and give them tips on how to kick-start a career in the industry was incredibly valuable for the students.”
This year the QMEA is celebrating 20 years of inspiring students to follow a trades or science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) study pathway with a focus on the many rewarding career opportunities in the resources sector.
