Scientific enquiry, teamwork and focus were on display in Collinsville today, as primary school students battled it out in the annual STEM Proud Robotics Competition, delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) in partnership with Thiess.

Over thirty Years 4-6 students from Collinsville State School, St John Bosco Catholic School and Scottville State School took part, programming and operating model robots to complete a series of challenges inspired by the mining industry.

QRC Director of Skills, Education and Diversity, Katrina-Lee Jones, said the popular competition sparks students’ interest in STEM and showcases how digital technology is shaping the world around them.

“These young people are getting hands-on experience and modelling the problem-solving, innovation and teamwork that drives the resources sector every day,” said Ms Jones.

“Competitions like this are a fun way to learn – helping students see how skills in coding, robotics and digital technology are needed in the resources industry and how they can lead to rewarding careers like mechatronics engineering.”

“The competition is the final activity after a series of workshops by specialist robotic technology educator, Dr Damien Kee, and a great way to showcase their new understanding of digital technologies.”

Mihai Mihet, Technical Services Manager at Thiess said they were proud to support the STEM Proud Robotics competition again in 2025.

“Innovation and technology are at the heart of enhancing safe, efficient and sustainable operations at Thiess,” said Mr Mihet.

It’s inspiring to witness talented school students embrace robotics and digital tools. Their ability to problem-solve through teamwork highlights a bright future for the resources industry, especially if talented students like these are part of it.”

The school teams were judged on their design, programming, teamwork and success in completing each of the challenges.

After a close contest, St John Bosco Catholic School was crowned the overall champion of the 2025 STEM Proud Robotics Competition.

Students said planning, problem-solving and teamwork were the secret to their success.

“Keep trying until you get it, persistence helps you succeed” said Sophie from Collinsville State school.

The annual competition remains a highlight of the school year for the local students, inspiring the next generation of problem-solvers and innovators.
