A virtual welder, electrical circuits and a power project were all part of the Tradies for a Day workshop delivered recently by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) to a group of Chinchilla State High School students.

The full-day workshop was an opportunity for Year 10 trade enthusiasts to deep dive into some practical skills with the support of experienced tradespeople from the workshop sponsor, Origin Energy, upstream operator of Australia Pacific LNG.

Chinchilla SHS principal, Rob Burke, said the workshop was a great opportunity for the students to gain some insight into the types of roles and careers they could forge in the resources and energy sector.

“At this stage in Year 10 the students are making decisions about their senior studies and this workshop has provided some guidance about the best subjects for students interested in a Vocational Education Training (VET) pathway,” said Mr Burke.

Origin General Manager Asset East, Steve Thatcher, said his team was proud to support QMEA trade workshops that encourage local secondary students to pursue careers in trade.

“Workshops like these allow our team to share trade skills and career experiences directly with students,” Mr. Thatcher said.

“With the energy sector growing, it’s vital to highlight career opportunities in our industry and inspire the next generation to help meet future energy needs.”

Katrina-Lee Jones, QRC Director of Skills, Education and Diversity, said a vocational career in trades was a great decision for students.

“There is a continual demand for skilled tradespeople in the energy and resources sector, so it is a sensible career decision,” said Ms Jones.

“The energy sector is literally a powerhouse for Queensland and can give young people a rewarding career,” she said.
