Sarina STEM Big Day

Around 100 students from the Mackay region put their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills to the test today in a hands-on STEM Big Day designed to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers to pursue career pathways in resources and related industries.

Hosted at Sarina State High School and delivered by the QMEA Resources Skills Academy in partnership with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), the event brought together Year 9 students from Sarina State High School, Mackay State High School, Mackay Northern Beaches State High School and Pioneer State High School.

From programming robots and investigating geology to designing pulley systems capable of moving heavy loads, students tackled a series of industry-inspired challenges that showcased how STEM skills are applied in modern workplaces.

Sarina SHS Principal, Adam Colley, said they were excited to host the STEM Big Day for the Year 9 students.

“The students enjoyed putting their STEM studies to the test, completing practical challenges that involved plenty of teamwork and problem-solving,” said Mr Colley.

“The STEM Big Day has given the students a deeper understanding of how science concepts are used in industry, particularly in mining operations.”

BMA Head of Engineering, Lydia Gentle said the STEM Big Day played an important role in exposing students to STEM careers in resources.

“At BMA, we are committed to supporting education and skills development opportunities that help young people prepare for the future.

“The STEM Big Day gives students the chance to learn through hands-on experiences, build confidence and develop valuable skills such as teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving.

“We are proud to support programs that encourage students to consider future pathways in STEM and contribute to a skilled, future-ready workforce for the region,” she said.

The Year 9 students worked in groups to complete three activities related to:

  • Earth sciences: Discovering the world of geology and how minerals and materials from the earth are used to help produce everyday objects
  • Technology: Programming Lego robots to complete a series of challenges – relating to the use of automative technology for transportation
  • Physics: Creating a pulley system to understand how physics can be applied to help move heavy loads on a work site.

The STEM Big Day will be followed with a heavy hydraulics workshop for Year 7 & 8 students on Thursday with students creating a model hydraulic arm and applying their physics knowledge to understand the role cranes play in moving heavy loads on a worksite.
