Over 60 students from two Rockhampton secondary schools gathered today for a hands-on day of mining careers discovery at CQUniversity.

The girls-only Rock Solid Futures workshop was delivered by the QMEA Resources Skills Academy in partnership with Coronado Global Resources.

Year 10 students attended the workshop from Rockhampton Girls Grammar School and The Cathedral College.

Pete Murphy, Manager – Organisational Capability at Coronado Global Resources, said team members already carving out careers at Coronado grabbed the opportunity to engage with the students.

“The mining sector has traditionally been male dominated, but more women are joining our workforce in professional and trade roles,” said Mr Murray.

“I think hearing from women in the industry, including a graduate mining engineer, an environmental scientist, electrical apprentice and HR officer from Coronado has made a big impact on the students,” he said.

The students rotated through mechanical, electrical and STEM activities related to real world resources contexts.

They also got practical career advice through a profiling activity which identified the roles best matching their interests along with a session on resume building and interview techniques.

Jen Hoyle, Acting Director – QMEA, said career readiness was a key focus for the workshop.

“Days like this are incredibly important for students as they contemplate potential career options and make decisions about their senior subject selections,” said Ms Hoyle.

“Having the Coronado team partner with us to deliver the workshop today gives the students a unique opportunity to find out more about working in resources directly from people in the industry.”

“After today I am sure the students have a better idea of the professional and trade pathways they want to follow after school.”
