Young STEM enthusiasts from across Queensland gathered in Mount Isa recently to discover more about the exploration and production resources essential to everyday life.
Sixteen Year 11 and 12 students traded some of their school holidays for a hands-on learning experience at the Oresome Minds (STEM) Camp, delivered by the QMEA Resources Skills Academy in partnership with Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines.
Alongside science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) challenges, students have been immersed in the resources industry through site-based activities and an underground tour of Glencore’s George Fisher Mine.
Daniel Mullens from Brisbane’s Cannon Hill Anglican College said, “The camp inspired me and gave me a greater understanding of engineering and the mining industry.”
Likewise, Charlotte White from St Hilda’s School on the Gold Coast used the camp to further explore her interest in engineering saying “I’m interested in applying engineering to real world problems. Through this camp I gained hands-on experience, while learning from some great mentors”
For many students, like Will Thiele from Ignatius Park College in Townsville, the camp was an opportunity to explore future careers. “This experience has been beneficial in guiding my future career pathway, and I hope to be able to pursue job opportunities in the industry in the future,” Will said.
Shari Barwick, Manager Human Resources for Glencore Metals Australia said Glencore had been a long-term supporter of the annual camp that backs the development of future mining professionals.
“It’s a great opportunity for students from local schools and across the state to see how STEM concepts and skills are applied in the mining sector,” said Shari.
“The camp develops confidence in teamwork, problem solving and communication and provides students with a clear picture of the rewarding careers available in our North-West Queensland operations.”
Jen Hoyle, Director – QMEA, said the Oresome Minds Camp helped students decide on their future study and career pathways.
“Time at an operational mine site and talking to industry professionals is a real eye-opener for the students,” Ms Hoyle said.
“Over the week, they have discovered the diversity of careers across the resources sector, from traditional roles like engineers and geologists to emerging roles using data technology – all of which are vital in modern mining operations.”
