Blackwater students curious about a career as a tradie had their questions answered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA)and Coronado Global Resources at a workshop today.

The Year 10 students had firsthand access to tradespeople from Coronado as they worked through a range of trades-based activities.

Peter Murphy, Manager – Organisational Capability at Coronado Global Resources said they were impressed with the students’ skills and enthusiasm.

“There is a continual demand for good tradespeople in the resources industry and I hope today’s experience has given our local Blackwater students more information about apprenticeships and traineeships,” Mr Murphy said.

“Coronado enjoys partnering with the QMEA in providing this program to Blackwater SHS and we are always impressed with the students’ engagement with the trade activities.”

Queensland Resources Council (QRC) Policy Director for Skills, Education and Diversity, Katrina-Lee Jones said the workshop had been intentionally developed for Year 10 students.

“These students already have a solid skill foundation which benefits from the interaction with experienced tradespeople,” said Ms Jones.

“They will soon have to decide on their subjects for the final senior years, so a full-day workshop can help clarify the best study pathway for a trade career.”

This year the QMEA is celebrating 20 years of inspiring students to follow a trades or science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) study pathway with a focus on the many rewarding career opportunities in the resources sector.
