Engineering, electrical circuits and earth sciences were the on the list at a science and trades workshop delivered at Clermont State High today.
Year 10 students moved from the science laboratory to the manual arts workshop as part of the full-day STEM and Trades workshop delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC).
Katrina-Lee Jones, QRC Policy Director – Skills, Education and Diversity, said the annual workshop was a great opportunity for the Year 10 students to discover more about trade and professional careers in the resources sector.
“The students worked through academic and hands-on activities designed to give them an insight into the actions they may perform if they were to be employed in the industry,” Ms Jones said.
“This is a time when they are thinking about their subject selection for Years 11 and 12 and today’s experience has given them ideas on the best pathway if they are keen to work in resources.”
The STEM and Trades workshop was delivered by the QMEA in partnership with Glencore Coal, with industry experts from the company assisting the students throughout the workshop.
Anthony Exelby, Human Resources Manager at Glencore Coal, said their team were excited to share their knowledge and skills with the students.
“We believe in the importance of having Glencore Coal’s apprentices and university graduates share their career journeys with the students. Their stories not only ignite a passion for the industry but also offer invaluable real-world insights that can shape future careers,” said Mr Exelby.
“Our operations play a big role in the community and we are dedicated to recruiting local talent. We hope today’s event has sparked a genuine interest among students, and that many may join us in the future.”
This year the QMEA is celebrating 20 years of inspiring students to follow a trades or science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) study pathway with a focus on the many rewarding career opportunities in the resources sector.
