Experts in resources gave Millmerran State School students a new appreciation of the critical role water management plays in energy and resource operations last week.

Interactive experiments were part of a Water: Yours, Ours and Mine workshop delivered on Friday by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) in partnership with Millmerran Power.

The QMEA is the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC).

Katrina-Lee Jones, QRC Policy Director – Skills, Education and Diversity, said the Year 7 students were keen to know more about water management and the different water treatment techniques that can be used.

“The hands-on experiments really enhanced the students understanding of effective water filtration on a large scale,” Ms Jones.

“The workshop also exposed students to the many technical and professional roles involved in water management including data technicians and hydrologists,” she said.

Shane Burge, Plant Manager at the Millmerran Power Station said they appreciated the opportunity to support the school and give the students a new perspective of their operations.

“Many of the students at Millmerran State School have family members employed by us, so we know they are aware of our operations but may not have a detailed understanding of our role as energy providers in Queensland,” Mr Burge said.

“The students discovered interesting facts about Millmerran Power today –like we provide power to about 1.3million Queensland homes and our processed water is 100 per cent recycled.”

“We enjoyed helping the students with their water experiments and bringing them to life by sharing information about Millmerran Power station’s water management processes.”
