There was plenty of energy in the room at a special Thinking Scientifically workshop with Year 9 STEM academy students at Dalby State High School yesterday.

The workshop was delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) in partnership with Arrow Energy.

Mona Anau, Dalby SHS Acting Principal, said the workshop guided the students through different scientific processes with a mix of hands-on experiments and expert advice from industry specialists.

“These Year 9 students are already showing a great passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects and today’s workshop has been designed to challenge their curiosity and inspire them to pursue STEM studies,” Ms Anau said.

“It was fabulous to have members of the Arrow Energy team at the workshop to demonstrate how some of the scientific processes are incorporated into energy industry operations – which plays such a big part in our community,” she said.

“They also shared their career stories with the students which gave them a broader understanding of how their interest in STEM could convert into an exciting career after school.”

Katrina-Lee Jones, QRC Policy Director for Skills, Education and Diversity, said the day had been successful in extending the students’ scientific knowledge and understanding of the roles they could pursue in the industry.

“Hydrologists, data analysts, environmental scientists and engineers are in high demand in the energy sector and today’s workshop will play a part in stimulating the students’ interest in exploring these professions as a future career,” Ms Jones said.
