Future scientists, data technologists, engineers and metallurgists are having their appetite for knowledge satisfied across a range of workshops being delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) in south-east Queensland schools.

The QMEA is the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council, developing and delivering science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and trade workshops to 100 Queensland schools.

Katrina-Lee Jones, QRC Director for Diversity, Skills and Education said Science Week (10 – 18 August) was a great time to highlight the importance of STEM education and the career potential it can offer young adults.

“Children are naturally intrigued by the world of science and the QMEA is committed to delivering programs that ignite continued interest into their secondary schooling and beyond,” said Ms Jones.

“The QMEA workshops are unique as they are delivered in partnership with the resources industry, so the students participate in practical STEM and trade activities while gaining a greater understanding of how these subjects are being applied in the workforce,” she said.

Ms Jones said the study of STEM involves a range of skills which are incorporated into the QMEA workshops.

“Students need to be able to observe and analyse data, as part of their experiments, and then apply this knowledge to interpret the results,” said Ms Jones.

“The workshops also require teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills – which are key to anyone wanting to have a future in the field of science and also essential for productivity and safety in the resources sector.”

In the last 12 months over 3000 students from south-east Queensland schools have participated in 100 QMEA workshops, programs and camps.
