Students join forces for mining future
At a time when the resources sector is calling out for more engineers, including those in mining, the Beakers. Bot. Build activity at Moura State High School could not have come at a better time.
Students from Biloela and Moura will jointly test their problem solving, analysis and team work skills in a realistic mine-site challenge this week.
Run by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) through the sponsorship of Anglo American the activity simulates the decisions engineers make every day around design of open pits and underground mines to managing equipment and production.
As part of the potential skills pipeline into the industry, the year-nine students will use robotics, programming and design and engineering to solve real challenges that arise at mine sites.
It is this close link to the world of work that Moura State High School Head of Science, Norah Parsons values the most.
“Moura was one of the original QMEA foundation schools and we value the real-world context these activities give the students,” said Ms Parsons.
“Even though our community has a connection to the resources sector, given where we live, our students still value the guidance and advice from industry representatives on how to use their talents for a fulfilling career,” she said.
Industry personnel from Anglo American will work alongside students in solving the challenges while at the same time providing insights about their own career pathway into the sector.
In activities, students are provided with tasters around skills involved in project management, design, construction and testing.
“Participation in these activities will provide first-hand experience into the options available if the students pursue a career in mining,” said Anglo American’s Dawson Mine General Manager, Clarence Robertson.
“Our team is looking forward to working with the students to connect their knowledge with real life challenges.
“These activities provide hands-on, practical experience for students, helping them envisage a career in the mining industry,” he said.
“This is an important initiative for the Moura community that Anglo American is pleased to continue to support”.
